Doordash Drivers Need to Wear Mask While Dashing

Recently, I wrote an article about Doordash customers that didn't seem to have much consideration for the dashers that delivered food to them. Many of these Doordash customers seemed to ignore the Doordash no-contact policy.

They would waid outside waiting for their food all the while not wearing a mask. Well, a Doordash customer read that article and suggested to me that I write about the other side. She specifically meant that I should write about the terrible dashers that don't wear a mask.

Her complaint was about dashers walking up to her house with no mask on. My first thought was that if she stood in her house and waited until her dasher left then it wouldn't matter to her whether they were wearing a mask or not. Even though her point was a little bit gibberish to me, it was still a topic to cover.

Should Doordash drivers have to wear a mask?

Since the beginning of September, Doordash policy states that every dasher, customer and merchant must wear a mask when interacting with one another. Should dashers be required to wear a mask? In my opinion, yes they should. I'm completely with Doordash on this one.

Sure, as independent contractors, there is nobody that can physically make a dasher wear a mask. When a dasher is wearing a mask, he or she is doing it out of respect for other people.

A dasher should think about the safety of others and their own safety. It shouldn't take Doordash to babysit anybody to wear a mask. Putting the policy in place does give them the right to terminate a dasher though if customers are complaining about somebody, and that may be a good thing.

There is nobody to physically monitor dashers though. Doordash does not have any babysitters out there in the field. The only way Doordash would be able to monitor something like this would be to have dashers send them random pics of themselves wearing a mask.

Uber Eats randomly sometimes has their Uber Eats drivers take a pic of their face and send it to them so that Uber could make sure it is them working and not somebody else. I don't think that Doordash would ever implement something like that though. I certainly hope that they don't.

Should a dasher continually and constantly wear their mask?

Common sense needs to be used here. Anybody that has worn a mask for a considerable amount of time knows that after a while it can get a bit uncomfortable. This is especially true in hot weather. There is no reason for a dasher to be wearing a mask constantly throughout the day when they don't need to.

When a dasher arrives at a pick up they should wear their mask. Even if it is a drive-thru a dasher should wear their mask as they are exposed to the workers in the drive-thru. As soon as the dasher is back in their vehicle, or has driven away from the drive-thru, there is no reason for them to wear their mask anymore.

The Doordash driver is all alone is their car. They are now making their way to the customer's location. There is absolutely no reason for them to be wearing their mask.

When the dasher drops off the food at the Doordash customer's location, it is advisable to wear a mask. Even before the Doordash policy, I would always wear my mask when delivering. I didn't want to be caught in a situation where a a bunch of kids come running out the front door toward me. Something like that rarely happens, but better to be safe than sorry.

Is it dangerous and unhealthy if a Doordash driver does not wear a mask?

It can be. When a dasher does not ever wear a mask, he or she is exposing themselves to the Corona Virus. It's sort of like a come and get me attitude. The thing about this pandemic is that if people could only hurt themselves, then it wouldn't be that big of a deal if some people decided not to wear a mask.

The problem with Covid 19 is that a person does not just wear a mask for their own protection. They are wearing a mask to protect others. Even if you were a person that thought that masks don't do anything, it's best to have consideration for those that do believe masks save lives. If they are wrong, you just have to wear a mask. If you are wrong, they could die. Why take any chances with anyone's life.
