With the passing of Proposition 22, Dashers in California are now guaranteed to earn at least 120 percent of minimum wage for active time. They'll also receive 30 cents per mile ans 100 percent of their tips. These new rules could be a game changer and alter the strategies that Doordash drivers have used in the past. It may make the overall experience for drivers and customers much better than it has ever been.
Does Prop 22 make the Cheap Ass calls worth taking now? |
Doordash drivers changing delivery strategies
Low paying calls are never anything Doordash drivers look forward to. There's nothing as unpleasant as having a delivery opportunity come in that offers $3 or $4 of pay. Most Dashers will usually decline these calls as they wont see it worth their time and effort. These calls will go round and round until some Dasher out there decides to accept it. Sadly, there are times when the only calls coming in will be these cheap paying calls, and if a Dasher just keeps declining these calls, they may end up with no work at all.
With the new 120 percent of minimum guarantee earnings guarantee for active time, many Dashers may find it wise to change their strategy and start accepting those cheap paying calls. The way things have always been, if a Dasher accepted all calls that came his way, he would have to worry about those hours when he would only earn $5 to $10 per hour. Yes, by accepting two cheap paying calls during an hour span that's what the Dasher's earnings would be. Not good at all!
Many Dashers would never accept those cheap paying calls, and would sit around waiting for a good call. Sometimes this would work out well, but other times it wouldn't as the offers would suddenly go silent, and that Dasher would wish that he had taken some of those cheaper paying calls so that he would at least earn something.
With the new minimum guarantee, a Dasher will never earn less than $16.80 per hour as long as they stay active. That means that those cheap paying $2 and $3 calls from Doordash will not hurt so bad anymore. Do two calls in an hour with each call taking a half hour, and you will earn $16.80. After that you factor in your mileage at 30 cents per mile and the tips customers left and the pay is not all that bad. It's actually good! I really believe that all Dashers will now average $25 to $30 per hour.
Prop 22 will make a pleasant and happy experience for Doordash customers
With many Doordash drivers taking the cheap paying calls, it will bring a happier and more satisfying customer experience as Doordash customer's orders will be delivered more quickly. As I mentioned earlier, usually Dashers would bypass these cheap paying calls, and the delivery opportunity would travel around Dasher to Dasher until finally somebody would accept it. That would make a huge delay in delivery time.
A cheap paying opportunity will now get accepted pretty fast just like the better opportunities. Dashers will now know that they are not going to get stuck making $5 to $10 for their whole hour of work. They know that they'll now receive at least fair pay for their efforts.
Proposition 22 had nothing to do with customers, but they will certainly benefit from all of this. I don't think many Doordash drivers realize it though. I don't think anybody really seen the benefit that customers would gain from all of this.
