I thought I would write about this today because apparently it's still happening. I've written about this scam about three years ago, and here is where you can find that article if interested. I will not go into as much detail in this post as I did in the old article, but I will give the basic information of how this scam works. First, let me explain why this is even a subject that I am going to cover right now.
My relative almost got scammed by a Doordash scammer
A relative of mine called me up a few weeks ago while he was dashing. He called me and asked me about the scam that I had told him about many years ago. His voice sounded disturbed. I asked why, and he told me that somebody just called him up saying that they were from Doordash. I asked him if he gave this guy his Doordash log-in information, and he told me that he did. I asked why he would do that, and he told me that the guy sounded very convincing. By the time he called me, he knew that he had screwed up. I'll get back to this story in a bit, but in case you don't know, I'm going to explain how this scam works.
This
scam has been around for many years, and a lot of Dashers, or gig
delivery gig drivers for that matter have lost hundreds if not thousands
to these scammers. I had an incident with one of these scammers a
couple of years ago. This was way after I wrote that first article about
this subject. I'll share that at the end of this article. Now, let's
see how this scam works.
Scammers placing a Doordash order and then calling you
The first thing one of these low-life scammers do is place a Doordash order. They are not in this for the order, so it will always be something very small. For example, it may be a small Coke from Jack-in-the-Box or something like that. Always look out for ridiculous small orders like that.
After
the Dasher picks up the order and marks that they are on their way,
they will receive a telephone call from Doordash. At least the caller
will say they are from Doordash. They will ask for the Dasher by their
name (they know this because they are really the customer.) They know
what the order is of course too.
What the scammer will say to the Doordash driver
This
Doordash rep (who is actually the person that ordered the food) will
tell the Dasher that there is a problem with the order. They will tell
the Dasher that Doordash suspects that this order is a fraud order and
that they will have to cancel it. Mind you, these scam artists really
have it down. They really give a good impression of the Doordash reps.
They'll try to be all polite and thank you. They of course are trying to
gain your trust. Why wouldn't you trust them anyways, they are Doordash
- right? WRONG!
Scammers will ask Dasher for their log-in information
To cancel the fraudulent Doordash order, the scammer will tell the Dasher that their log-in information is needed. A lot of Dashers will have no problem giving this information as they trust this is a Doodash rep. How else would they know all the information about them and the order?
Getting this information is the main goal of the scammers. After getting this information, they will thank the Dasher, tell them that this order will be canceled and to keep the food. They will then cancel their Doordash order.
Scammers will input their bank information in to Dasher's account
Once the scammer has the Dasher's log-in info, they will log in and change the bank account information in the Dasher's account. They will change the weekly deposit bank account information to theirs, and they'll change the "Fast Pay" debit card information to theirs.
What they are hoping is that the Dasher will not notice these changes. When the weekly deposit time comes around, all of the Dasher's hard earned money will go to the scammers account. The Dasher will not know that they were scammed until it's too late.
Doordash is making it more difficult for these scammers
I
will say that Doordash has taken security measures for the good to
minimize these acts of fraud. In the past, changing the"Fast Pay"
information was a big problem. The scammer would log in to the Dasher's
account. They would then change the "Fast Pay" information and instantly
have the Dasher's earnings transferred to them. Doordash now will not
let a Dasher use the "Fast Pay" feature for 7 days after changing their
debit card information. This is a good thing as the scammers can't
instantly transfer money to their account. Instead, hopefully the Dasher
will notice during these 7 days that there have been changes made.
Also, changing the regular weekly deposit pay or any other changes will
trigger an email from Doordash. It would be in the best interest of
Dashers to pay attention to things like this.
What was the outcome with my Doordash relative
I told my relative to immediately hang up with me, change his log-in information and to go to his bank account information and see if any of his bank information had been changed. These scammers were certainly quick. It had only been about five minutes, but they ended up changing all the banking information on his account. I told him to just go on ahead and change it back and that was that.
He was very lucky. the scammers did not get anything from him, but it saddens me to think that there are Dashers out there that have been taken advantage of. It has to be a helpless feeling knowing that some scammer just stole hundreds or thousands of dollars from you.
Scammer trying to scam me on Doordash
A couple of years ago, I picked up an order. It was of course a one item order. I went to deliver, and the delivery address did not exist. The GPS took me to a bus stop. I looked at surrounding address, and this customer's address certainly did not exist.
My phone rang, and I was greeted by a friendly Doordash male voice. He apologized for the inconvenience, and told me that this was a fraudulent order. He really tried to play the part like he was on my side in all of this. He kept asking me for my log-in information so he could cancel and fix this problematic order. I kept telling him I'd rather not. He kept trying to persuade me for about 10 minutes, and I played along with it, but kept telling him no.
Eventually,
he let out a "F" you. I almost spit my soda out as I laughed so hard. I
said "What did you say punk." "Now you finally come out your shell ha."
We cussed each other out a little bit, then he asked me the stupidest
question. He asked me "Why are you so mad?" I told him that I wasn't
mad. I told him that I knew he wasn't Doordash all along, and that punk
ass lazy low life kids like him piss me off. I told him that people like
him are too lazy to go out and work because they just want to sit
around all day scratching their you know what. The funny thing is this
idiot actually listened to me school him for about 10 minutes.
Don't ever give your Doordash log-in information to anybody
If you get anything from this article, please never give your Doordash log-in information to anyone. That means anybody! Doordash would never call you and ask you for this information. If you are the type that feels pressured easily, just hang up on the person. I know some people think too much, and they might be thinking that they would not want to hang up on a real Doordash rep.
If
a Dasher is being asked for their log-in information, it is 100 percent
not a legit Doordash rep. It is a scammer. Some of them are good
persuaders. Don't fall for it. With that said "Happy Dashing!"
