Doordash does not require their drivers to work out of any particular vehicle. In short, it really doesn't matter what kind of car you drive. All that Doordash is concerned with is that a Dasher is able to pick up and deliver a customer's order. Got an old clunker you want to dash in? No problem! This is great news for you because no matter what kind of car you have, you can earn great money as a Dasher! Maybe you can even save up and buy a newer and more reliable car to dash in!
On the Doordash platform, Dashers are now able to view a section where they can add their vehicle's make and model. This option was added when Covid-19 plagued or world. Please note that adding your vehicle information on the Doordash platform has always been optional. It is not mandatory.
During the heart of the pandemic, with many merchants closing and not allowing customers into their establishments, they instead preformed to bring the food out to Dasher's vehicles. Not to pick on them, but I must mention that Uber Eats, a Doordash competitor, requires all of their drivers to share their vehicle information on the Uber platform. Drivers must share the make and model of their car by uploading vehicle registration information as well as auto insurance information. If you don't upload this information you will not be able to drive until the required information is provided. Thank God Doordash does not work like this. There's a reason they are the number one food delivery platform!
Also, Uber Eats does not have any pity for their driver's if any vehicle info expires. Ruthless! A few years ago when I was very active with Uber Eats, my insurance had expired without me realizing it. The next day, Uber Eats took it upon themselves to let me know. They didn't give me a friendly reminder or warning to take care of it soon. I was simply not able to log on to drive. Uber Eats is very serious about having up to date registration and auto insurance. This may be due to Uber being a ride-share company first and a food delivery company second.
Does Doordash care about what kind of car I drive?
Doordash does not care what kind of vehicle a dasher drives. It doesn't matter if it's an old bucket, as long as it can help get the job done it's fine. Doordash does require that their dashers have a valid driver's license and auto insurance, but they do not ask dashers to upload this information to them every time something is renewed or approaching expiration; which is great.
Dashers are smart enough to know that they need a driver's license and auto insurance while driving. If they are not smart enough to know this, they may have to live and learn. When a police officer pulls them over they will wish they obeyed the law. Again, live and let learn! But that's not you!
What if I don't have a car to Doordash in?
There are a few selective cities where a Dasher can deliver food on their scooter, bicycle or on foot. Usually, it is major metropolitan cities that offer scooter and bicycle delivery. Cities that offer Doordash walker service is more rare, but there are a few cities out there. I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that San Francisco, CA is one of them. If interested in one of these delivery alternatives, a dasher will have to contact Doordash directly for more information.
Most will find that their area does not offer scooter, bicycle or foot walking delivery. What can a person do? The only other option would be to rent a vehicle to dash in. There are a few companies out there that specialize in renting vehicles to app based gig workers. They offer affordable rates that make it worthwhile to do gig economy work with.
I have personally rented vehicles in the past to do gig work and was completely satisfied. There are so many perks that a gig worker will get when they are not driving their own personal vehicle.
