There are certain actions and activities that a Dasher should should never do while out dashing. I would hope that most Dashers have enough common sense to not do any of these things, but I have seen or heard of Dashers doing every single thing that I am going to mention. Some seem kind of funny, but anyways here goes.
A Dasher should not be chewing when delivering a Doordash customer's food
Can you imagine a Doordash driver walking up to you to hand you your food while they are chewing? What's going to be the first thought in our head? Of course we're going to be thinking that this Dasher had their hands in our food. Chances are this is not the case, but the thought will certainly go through our mind.
If you're a Dasher and are having a bite to eat, it would be in everyone's best interest for you to finish your food before arriving at your drop-off location. Sometimes the customer is waiting outside for you, and you don't want to get caught eating as you pull up.
I know some will say that a Dasher has every right to eat whenever they want, and to be honest they are right, but just because you can do something does not mean that you should. It's only going to gross out the customer, and you'll more than likely get a bad customer rating. Sure, they know that you're a human being that needs to eat too, but they would prefer you to do it on your own time. Their only expectation is to see a pleasant Dasher deliver their food and then be on their way.
Don't take the food off of the passenger floor of your car when the Doordash customer walks up
It can never be pleasant for a Doordash customer to see their bag of food picked up from the passenger floor. Sure, the food is in a bag, but customers would much rather see their food picked up from a vehicles seat. Think about it. It's pretty nasty for the food to go where someone's dirty shoes always go, and there ain't many things that are nastier than a person's shoes. Placing customer's food on the passenger floor is an easy way to get low customer ratings.
A Dasher should not be smoking as they pull up to make their delivery
Actually, you shouldn't smoke in your car at all. As a former pack a day smoker for 30 years, I'm down with a smoker's freedom to smoke whenever they want, but we have to realize that smokers and their environment stink. When you are a smoker, you don't smell it, but that strong tobacco smell goes with you everywhere you go.
Nobody wants to see a Dasher pull up to their house with smoke coming out their car window. Most smokers wouldn't do this, instead they will make sure to throw out their cigarette before arriving to the customer. The bag of food will likely still smell like smoke though, and Doordash customers won't appreciate it.
A person like me probably wouldn't notice, but I know that some people are very sensitive to cigarette smoke, and they will certainly smell it. Best thing to do is to only smoke outside of your car when you don't have a call. I know some smokers reading this are rolling their eyes and are thinking, easier said than done, but it is really the best thing to do if you can.
Don't go for the Doordash customer's drinks while you're driving
This is a problem that is common with new Dashers. I know I had this problem when I first began dashing. You have the customer's drink in your middle cup holder, and out of habit you go to take a drink. Sounds funny, but when you are not used of Dashing this is very easy to do. You are used of your regular driving, and that cup of whatever is in the middle is yours.
Once you become an experienced Dasher and are used of always making deliveries, this habit of going for the drink will go away. Sure, you may have your own drink too, but a new habit will form that makes you aware that you have Doordash customer drinks in the car.
A Dasher should not walk through a customer's grass
This is pretty much respect. Many people put a lot of time and effort in to making their lawn look good. When a Dasher comes to make a delivery and starts walking on the grass it can really shake a nerve. Always try to walk on the pavement and / or walkway.
A Dasher should never enter a customer's house even with permission
This is a safety issue, and there is nothing more important than a Dasher's safety. There is never any reason to enter a customer's home. There has been a few times when I've had customers ask me to place their food on their kitchen table. In every incident the customer was disabled. I did not do it for them, and both times they rolled themselves to their front door in a wheelchair, and I handed them their order.
I know we all want to be nice and help others, but in the world we live in we can never put our safety at risk. What if I walked in and had a gun pulled out on me so they can rob me? What if someone is just pretending to be disabled to get you in their house? Even though nobody should enter a customer's home, it is especially dangerous for females as they are frequently targeted. Again, never enter a Doordash customer's home no matter what.
A Dasher should not think that everybody is going to love their dog
Some Dashers enjoy taking their dog with them when they dash. It is their companion and like a child to them. Unfortunately, not everybody sees it that way. Some Doordash customers look at dogs in an entirely different way and don't want some beast in the car with their food. It sickens them to their stomach.
Most people of course love dogs, but they wouldn't appreciate a Dasher having their dog in the car around their food. It is not okay just because the food is in the front seat, and the dog is in the back seat. Even if so, some customers will have thoughts of the dog sniffing on the food. Doordash customers do not love your dog like you do, so please keep your dog at home where it belongs.
A Dasher should not be over-friendly
As a food delivery person, a Dasher's job is to deliver the food and move on. Some Dashers like to fraternize with their customers and this can be a big no-no. It's great to be friendly, but over-friendliness is a problem. Customers want to go inside and eat their food. They don't want to stand outside talking to the delivery guy for 10 minutes. Sure, most customers are not going to be rude and tell you to get lost, but as a Dasher you should have the courtesy to not hold them up. They did not call Doordash to make a new friend.
A Dasher should not text the customer every move they make
It's okay to update a Doordash customer when there is a problem such as a long wait at the merchant, but some Dashers can be ridiculous and annoy a customer more than they think. It is true that a Doordash customer will want to be contacted with any important information, but they don't want to know about every move you make. I've heard stories about Dashers constantly texting the customer and how annoyed the customers became. Don't be that Dasher, or you may find yourself with a low customer rating that could have easily been avoided.
