Decline a Doordash offer and the pay goes down for the next Dasher?

I've been doing Doordash for a very long time, and there's always been something that's baffled me that just doesn't make any sense. First off, just so you know, I have the luxury of having a few very close relatives that do Doordash. With that said, we have noticed something that a Dasher going at this alone would not ever realize. Let me explain.

The Doordash pay increases as more Dashers decline an offer

With this food delivery service, it would only make sense for Doordash, or any other food delivery gig company, to raise the pay of an offer as different Dashers reject it. For example, Doordash sends an offer to a Dasher and offers $5, but he declines it. Doordash then sends the same offer to another driver for $5.25, but he declines it too. They then send it to a third driver for $5.50, but he also rejects it.

You've certainly noticed the pattern here, and it makes a lot of sense. The pay for this particular order should increase until a Dasher accepts the call. It usually works this way, but don't think for a moment that this logic is set in stone.

Are you saying Doordash offers less pay as more and more drivers decline a call?

Recently, I was with two relatives of mine, and we all had our Dasher App on. We were sitting around talking when I received a delivery opportunity that was 15 miles away for $8. It was much too far for me, and I declined it. A few seconds later, one of my relatives received the same offer, but it was offering her $7.50 and we had a good laugh about it. After she declined, my other relative got the same call, but he was only offered $7. This gave us an even bigger laugh! As you can see, this particular call was going down 50 cents every time it was circulated around to a new driver.

This does not make any sense at all! Why would a Doordash call end up offering less pay as it's circulated to new drivers? I can honestly say that this isn't the first time that I've had something like this happen, but it is the first time that it has happened with three people. I have been with one other Dasher on multiple occasions before when I've seen the pay go down when offered to the next Dasher. Baffling! But with three Dashers it was even more baffling!

So what's the reason for the pay of a Doordash offer getting lower?

I believe that it's some kind of glitch with their algorithm. I believe that it happens quite frequently, but the vast majority of Dashers would never notice. After rejecting a call, a Dasher doesn't know how much the Dasher before them or the Dasher after them is offered. The only way to know is if you're with another Dasher that you know and y'all are at the same location and are offered the same call.

Whether this is a glitch or something else, it has to be costing Doordash a lot of money with unfulfilled orders or unsatisfied customers asking for refunds or credits. As we all know, the longer a call has to circulate around to different Dashers, the longer it's going to take for the customer to receive their order. If Doordash is having a difficult time finding a driver for a particular order, they'd surely want to offer more pay so that a Dasher will accept the call and deliver the customer's order as soon as possible.

Again, the vast majority of the time the pay goes up, but if you are ever curious and want to see this happen (the pay go down,) go on ahead and get together with a close friend or relative and try it. I once had a friend get offered $10 for a call, after he declined it I receive the offer for $7! This was a $3 difference! Again, a good laugh, but it really makes you wonder what the heck is going on with Doordash!
