Don't bug me please. Leave me alone. Don't ask me questions. I was just in that type of mood. Surely most of us are like that at least every once in a while. I didn't feel like mingling with anybody. I was out dashing and picking up an order from a local restaurant when I heard a voice behind me say "So how long have you been dashing?" Random questions kept coming and coming, and I gave the shortest answers possible. Many were yes or no answers.
Ten minutes had went by, and I was getting a little annoyed. I went up to the restaurant workers to see what was going on with my food, and the restaurant told me it would be ten more minutes. I thought about abandoning ship, but it was the last call of the evening, it paid a decent $15 and the drop off was on the way home. I had to wait this one out!
Okay, so I thought I'd kill time and chat it up with my newfound buddy. This should make time go by quickly. I learned that this dasher was three weeks new and was very happy with the tips he had been receiving. I told him how that was great and told him how Doordash used to steal our tips for years up until a few months ago when the new pay model came out. He couldn't believe it! He asked me how a company could go on so long getting away with something like that and my answer to him was I don't know.
This new dasher's question of how Doordash got away with stealing tips for so long made me think. How in the hell did Doordash get away with stealing tips for such a long time? I mean really. It's crazy if you think about it. This went on for years before they felt enough pressure to have to change the way they handled customer tips.
Doordash started their tip stealing pay model in 2017. As time went on more and more dashers started to get wise about Doordash stealing the tip money that customers were leaving for them. Even with more dashers knowing about what was going on, the majority of dashers out there were still clueless about it, but as I said, more and more dashers began to figure out what was going on. Some people wrote about it online. Others made YouTube videos about the subject. No matter what everybody did though, nothing ever changed.
Doordash was never threatened by articles or Youtube videos. It would take a court of law to force Doordash to change their tip stealing policy. That never happened though, and if this ever had went to court don't think that Doordash would have rolled over. They had their defense. Also, keeping drivers as independent contractors was very important to them when it came to this matter because Doordash would not be able to pull this stuff with workers that were classified as employees. Although it was very important, having independent contractors was just one of the many defenses that Doordash would have used.
The answer is quite simple. They did not have to. Why would they? As soon as they did it would be less cash revenue for the company. Now, don't get me wrong. Even with the new pay model in effect, Doordash still has millions coming in every month, but under the tip stealing pay model they had even more coming in.
As a company, Doordash has a right to earn money and make a profit, but it should have never come at the Doordash customer's expense. Being dishonest and playing with words to fool customers into tipping was just darn wrong. By keeping almost all of the tip money for yourself while the customers thought their money was going to the driver was just distasteful.
No matter what Dashers said or did, Doordash was not ever going to change their tip stealing pay model to satisfy their drivers. Doordash sort of took a big brother role in the situation and acted like dashers didn't know what was good for them. They continually tried to brainwash dashers in to believing that they earned more when they would subsidize the Doordash customer's tips. It's really unbelievable, but they had some dashers believing that they were better off like this instead of receiving their actual tip money from customers.
Just like any company Doordash appreciates its customers. They have to appreciate them. Without the customers there is no company. When it comes to Doordash drivers, they come a dime a dozen. Although Doordash needs drivers to operate their business, for every driver that quits there will be another two waiting to take their place. For this reason, Doordash is never going to give in to dashers demands if they don't have to. Understandably, this is especially true when you are messing with their money.
Customers on the other hand are a whole different story. Doordash does not want to lose any of their customers. There is just too much competition out there. Doordash does not want to lose any of their customers to Postmates, Uber Eats or any of their other competitors. Making mistakes that will cause them to lose customers would be a very costly mistake.
When the mass media shined some attention on Doordash for their tip stealing scam many Doordash customers learned the truth on how their tips were being handled. It took a few giant media outlets like the New York Times and others to reveal the trickery and con that Doordash had created. This was great because all of the little blogs and Youtube videos apparently did not catch enough people's attention. The tip stealing was something that Doordash customers never gave any thought to before. Why would they? The app said that the driver received 100 percent of their tip. It all seemed pretty plain and simple.

Why didn't Doordash change their tip stealing pay model earlier?
The answer is quite simple. They did not have to. Why would they? As soon as they did it would be less cash revenue for the company. Now, don't get me wrong. Even with the new pay model in effect, Doordash still has millions coming in every month, but under the tip stealing pay model they had even more coming in.

Dashers could not convince Doordash to start paying them their tips
No matter what Dashers said or did, Doordash was not ever going to change their tip stealing pay model to satisfy their drivers. Doordash sort of took a big brother role in the situation and acted like dashers didn't know what was good for them. They continually tried to brainwash dashers in to believing that they earned more when they would subsidize the Doordash customer's tips. Doordash customers are to be thanked for changing the pay model
Just like any company Doordash appreciates its customers. They have to appreciate them. Without the customers there is no company. When it comes to Doordash drivers, they come a dime a dozen. Although Doordash needs drivers to operate their business, for every driver that quits there will be another two waiting to take their place. Many Doordash customers became infuriated when they learned that the tip money that they had been leaving for their dashers did not increase the dasher's pay. Instead, their tip money went straight into Doordashs pocket. The majority of customers felt that they would have never left a tip had they knew that the drivers were not receiving the their tip money on top of whatever they were getting paid already.
Doordash felt the pressure from the customers. They did not want to lose any of their regular customers. They had to do something to retain at least a good portion of their customers. Doordash was shamefully exposed for their crookedness and was up against a wall. It was now time that they had to change their pay model. There could no longer be any tip stealing. They would now have to give their dashers all of the tip money that customers left for them.
While all of this was going on Postmates and Uber Eats sent out emails to their customers and drivers reminding them how they would never steal tips. These two rival companies of Doordash were not lying about anything. It was just a kick to Doordash while they were down. Postmates and Uber Eats did nothing wrong. They just wanted to remind everybody that their drivers actually do receive 100 percent of the customer tips. Anybody that drives for Postmates or Uber Eats definitely knows that this is true.
In September of 2019 Doordash ended up changing their pay model to one that most people are happy with. Dashers are happy about receiving a higher base pay and customer tips on top of it. Doordash customers are happy that their tip money is actually going in the dashers pocket, and that is really what matters here. Nobody likes to be tricked and made a fool of. Doordash customers need to be happy, and by making them out to be fools did not help Doordash at all. I'm sure that Doordash lost a lot of customers with all of this tip stealing business, but I am sure it is in their greatest interest to win these customers back.
Doordash should pay back all the tip money they stole
You would think so wouldn't you? How would that work though? Do you give all the tip money back to the customers? Do you pay out that tip money to the dashers? It would be a lengthy, confusing and complicated process, but that would be Doordashs problem wouldn't it be?
I don't think that Doordash will ever have to repay all of the tip money that they stole. That's just my opinion though. I think that they should have to, but again I doubt that it would ever happen. This is especially more true as time passes.
I have even heard individuals that make a claim by stating that the Doordash CEO should be prosecuted for stealing millions and millions of dollars from innocent customers and drivers. I'm not sure of what the exact charges would be, but there does some to be some criminal element here, and I can see these peoples point of view.
If I went out and conned innocent people out of a lot of money, I would be scared that if I got caught I'd go to jail. Think about it. If Martha Stewart went to prison for selling stock because her stock broker told her to, does a person that steals millions of dollars from innocent people deserve to go prison? You can answer that to yourself, but I think you can understand why some people take this stance.
Thank you Doordash customers
Before ending this article I want to thank Doordash customers one last time. It's only right to give appreciation where it is deserved. Without Doordash customers, us dashers would not have people to deliver food to. That would equate to dashers not earning any money which of course would not be a good thing.
Thank you Doordash customers for taking a stance and forcing Doordash to change their tip stealing pay model. The dashers that had always known about the tip stealing scam were tempted many times to tell customers about it and probably did a small percentage of the time. Most of the time it was not worth it though because there would be a chance of getting disabled from the Doordash platform if the company found out.
If a customer called up Doordash after a dasher had told them about the tip stealing scam, Doordash would know that a particular dasher was out there on the field preaching to customers about the tip stealing. This could easily lead to their deactivation from the platform. Remember, many of these dashers have families to feed and rent to pay so they were not going to take a risk like that.
Now that dashers are receiving the tips that Doordash customers leave them things are so much better. Doordash drivers are now earning more for their work thanks to a higher Doordash base pay and customer tips on top of it. Also, customers should be glad to know that their dasher is always receiving 100 percent of their tip. All of this is possible now thanks to you the Doordash customer.
