When will Popositiion 22 begin for Doordash drivers?

With the passing of Prop 22 in California last month, many may be wondering when Doordash drivers will see the Prop 22 benefits kick in. For those that don't know, that means a guarantee of 120 percent of minimum wage for active work time and 30 cents per mile while still keeping 100 percent of their tips. There are also health benefits and other protection for drivers while on duty.

Some Dashers eagerly await Prop 22 benefits to kick in

There are a lot of California Dashers out there that are excited about the upcoming Prop 22 benefits. Sure, some are excited about the new driver protection and health care benefits, but most are excited about the guaranteed pay that they will be receiving. Once Prop 22 officially starts, Dashers in California will be guaranteed 120 percent of minimum wage for active time. That means a dasher constantly on the go is guaranteed to earn $15.60 per hour, 30 cents per mile and keep 100 percent of their tips. This can add up to really good money!

Keep in mind that we are figuring out the guaranteed pay by calculating the 2020 minimum wage of $13 per hour. With the new year coming up, minimum wage will be $14 in California. That means in 2021, a dasher that works a whole hour straight on active duty will receive a guaranteed pay of $16.80 for the hour. Again, this does not include tips or the mileage reimbursement.

Some Dashers are not happy with the Prop 22 benefits

To Dashers that are not happy with prop 22, all I can say if forget about it move on. Why? Well, it really won't matter much to you. The guarantee does not mean that a dasher has to make that little. If a dasher does better than what the minimum hourly guarantee is, good for him or her.

There are hustlers out there that laugh at this guarantee and feel like it will do nothing for them. Why? Because they are confident that they will always earn so much more than the guaranteed minimum. All I can say to individuals like this is good for you. We should always applaud a dasher that is earning an average of $20 or more per hour after expenses. With that said, for those that can't make that much, the guaranteed earnings is a big plus.

So when will the benefits of Prop 22 actually begin?

The benefits of Prop 22 comes into affect starting at the beginning of 2021, but we are not going to have to wait that long. Doordash announced that dashers should see the change happen sometime in the middle of December. They didn't give an exact date, and that is smart on their part as they probably won't release the new changes to everybody at the same time. I could be wrong, but they will probably roll out the new system gradually to different parts of the state.

It's been reported that the change has already happened in a few parts of the state. These areas may be the testing grounds as Doordash prepares to go statewide. Nothing wrong with testing the waters before going all out. I mean, Doordash has no choice here, they have to obey, but making sure that their new system works just the way they want it is well worth their time and effort.

If the Doordash platform does not update to include the 120 percent guaranteed hourly pay until the beginning of the year, surely most of us will be fine with that. Of course, the sooner the better as most of us are anxiously waiting the update, but we must be patient.

Will prop 22 benefit this Doordash driver?

Currently, I believe that this 120 percent guaranteed pay will positively benefit me. Why? Well, in the area that I am situated in right now, it's not as busy as when I worked in Los Angeles. I'm not even in the suburbs. I'm now in a rural area of California, and there is not nearly as many calls as the big city. There are times when I am constantly on the go, but there are other times when I can do a lot of sitting around.

There are days when I can hit $200, but there are other times when I am lucky to make $120. A lot of times I will receive a string of cheap $2 or $3 calls, and this is just as bad as not getting any calls at all. Trust me when I say that I am the last person that would ever take those cheap paying calls, but with new rules in play, I may have to strategize differently to make all of this work as good as possible for me. With that said, when it's very slow, this new strategy might make these cheap paying calls worth doing.
