Doordash offering Dashers Cash on Delivery Orders

Recently, Doordash has sent Dashers an opt out link in regards to their newly promoted "Cash on Delivery service." Below, you will find an image that most Dashers have recently had pop up on their screen while trying to log in.

Is cash on delivery a new idea from Doordash?

Before saying anything else about this, I have to say that many years ago, Doordash had experimented with this type of set up. I will admit that I wasn't a fan of it. In the area that I worked at the time, Pa-Pa John's Pizza would always be a cash on delivery offer. When receiving the offer, the app would let you know that it was a cash on delivery order. This gave you the ability to decline it if you wished. At this time, it was only a few selected merchants that did this.

We never got the pop up advertising like the one recently received (the image above.) Maybe the reasoning behind this is that Doordash is going to be using their Cash on Delivery program more often now. Who knows? We shall see.

How does this new Doordash Cash on Delivery program work?

It is really quite simple. A Dasher is to collect cash payment for the order when they deliver. The Dasher is to keep that cash as their own. When payday comes, Doordash will deduct that amount from the Dashers regular pay.

Please note that the Dasher earnings for the delivery will be in the Dasher's regular earnings and will be paid during payday. It's the cost of the food that the Dasher is keeping and what Doordash will deduct from the Dasher's account. Also, if the customer gives more cash than what their order was for, that is to be kept by the Dasher as a cash tip.

Dashers will have to provide the customers with change. If there ever is a delivery when the Dasher cannot provide change, there will be an option on the app where the Dasher can inform Doordash of the situation. Doordash will instruct the Dasher to hand over the food to the customer and will take care of everything. A situation like this does not have any negative impact on the Dasher. It just slows things down as having change for the customer would make things a lot quicker.

Dashers can opt out of the Doordash Cash on Delivery program

I think it's great that Doordash has given Dashers the option as to whether they want to participate in cash on delivery orders or not. There are many reasons that a Dasher may not want to do these types of orders. A simple click of a button and a Dasher can easily opt out.

Is Cash on Delivery a good idea for Doordash?

In my opinion, those that will be doing Cash on Delivery orders are going to experience more headaches than what it's worth. There are going to be a lot of drop-offs when a customer is trying to pay with a very large bill. Sure, the Dasher may have $30 of change on them, but when the customer orders $20 of food and is trying to pay with a $100 bill, there is going to be a problem that will slow everything down.

The major problem that I have with these Cash on Delivery orders is the increased likelihood of getting robbed. People will now assume that Dashers have cash on them. To be quite honest, I very rarely carry any cash, and I'm sure most others don't as well. Only one of America's stupidest criminals would ever try to rob a Dasher. There would never be anything to get.

Now, with some Dashers carrying $20 or $30 on them, some knuckleheads might think that it's worth it to rob a Dasher. I know most of us are thinking who in their right mind would rob somebody for so little, but trust me when I say that there are some real morons out there. They will risk getting busted and ruining their life for a few measly dollars.

Overall, I think that this Cash on Delivery program by Doordash is a terrible thing, and I hope they get rid of it. The negatives of it far outweigh the positives. I'm hoping everybody opts out of it, but I know that there are going to be those Dashers that think it'll be best if they go for it since most other Dashers are probably going to opt out. They'll think that this means more orders for them. Again, I just hope Doordash gets rid of this program and instead thinks about the safety of all Dashers out there.
