What is Dasher base pay and is it fair?

When delivering for Doordash, the amount of money that a dasher earns for a call is based on a few factors. The total amount paid is tallied up from base pay, promotions and customer tip. Most of the time, promotions will not be part of the equation, but when there is a promotion, it will be factored in.

What is Doordash base pay?

This is the amount of money that Doordash is contributing to an orders overall pay. It is paid directly from Doordash. The amount of base pay that a dasher will receive is made of different things, and the base pay that a driver receives for a call will be anywhere from $2 to $10.

The way Doordash explains it is that the base pay is figured out by the distance, the time and the desirability of the call. I'm not sure what constitutes the desirability of a call. Could it be a restaurant that gets declined a lot by dashers is an undesirable call? More likely it means that a 10 mile call at 5 pm when there's a lot of traffic will have more base pay. I haven't found any of this to always be true, but it's what is implied by Doordash.

What else impacts a dashers total pay for a call?

Besides the base pay, any promotions or challenges will be added to the overall pay for a delivery. Every once in a while Doordash will have a promotion such as an extra dollar or two for every call completed between certain times. They will also sometimes have challenges in which a dasher can earn additional amounts for completing a certain amount of calls during a set time frame. Again, this is only when Doordash is offering these incentives.

Most of the time, the only other thing added to a dashers overall pay is the customers tip. So, if the base pay for a call is $5, and the customer tips $3, the dashers total pay for the call will be $8.

Is the Doordash base pay fair?

As mentioned above, Doordash shares with us the way they figure out base pay. This is great, but a lot of dashers suspect that it's a bunch of hogwash and that Doordash has another way of figuring out their base pay for a delivery.

It goes a little something like this. If a customer places an order for McDonalds, and they don't leave a tip at all, Doordash may offer $5 base pay for the call. So, the dasher would earn $5 total for the delivery.

If that very same customer had tipped $3, then Doordash would instead make the base pay $2 for the call. Again, the dasher would earn $5. Pretty much Doordash will pay as little base pay as possible for a call and will determine this based on what the customer tipped. With Doordash using this method, nobody can easily say or prove that Doordash is stealing any tips.

Anybody accusing Doordash of handling their base pay like this would have a difficult time proving it. But, with the track record that Doordash has had in the past, it would not surprise anybody. Many years ago, Doordash would apply the customer's tip to what they called guaranteed pay. It's complicated and too long to explain right here, but basically if a customer tipped, it would never make a difference in the dashers pay. It was at this time when Doordash was caught red handed stealing tips, and they have surely paid for it through many lawsuits.
