This question is for those that are new to Doordash, or for somebody that is interested in becoming a Doordash driver. It is not intended for experienced Dashers as they will obviously already understand how Doordash pay works. With that out the way, let me explain how Doordash pay works.
Does Doordash pay you if you don't get an order?
Doordash does not pay you if you don't receive an order. There is no hourly wage here. Dashers are paid a different amount of money for each delivery that they complete. The great thing is that a dasher gets to pick and choose the deliveries that they feel are worth their time. If they don't want a certain delivery, a simple push of a button will decline the offer.
If a dasher is sitting in a parking lot somewhere waiting for a call for a whole hour but nothing comes, that Dasher will not earn anything. Not to discourage anybody, but any experienced Dasher that has been doing this long enough has certainly been there. Luckily, it does not happen very often and Doordash usually keeps us dashers busy.
How do I know how much a Doordash delivery pays?
When Doordash sends you an offer, you will hear your phone beep and the offer will be displayed on the screen of your cell phone. It will tell you the name and location of the restaurant. It will show you a map of the area you have to go to get to the restaurant and the customer. It will show you how many miles your total trip will be, and last but not least it will show you how much the pay is.
Doordash only pays you when you complete an order. After picking up an order from a restaurant and delivering it you will see your earnings go up. The delivery is complete when a dasher slides that they have completed the delivery, and this can only be done when close to the delivery location.
Does Doordash choose my deliveries?
No they do not, and that is what makes being an independent contractor so great. Doordash cannot make a dasher do any deliveries that they don't want to. The reason for that is because Dashers are not employees of Doordash. They are independent contractors that work for themselves. If dashers were employees, they would certainly have to do all deliveries that Doordash told them to.
Will Doordash get mad at me if I decline too many calls?
They will not get mad at you. Again, as an independent contractor you are free to choose the calls that you accept and decline. Doordash does keep statistics on their drivers and acceptance rate is one of them. Many new dashers get worried when their acceptance rate gets low. They think that they are going to get in trouble with Doordash. That is simply not the case though. You can read more about that here.
Wouldn't Dashers make more money if they were paid hourly?
For most Dashers the answer is no. Even though every Dasher's earnings will vary, most Dashers are making well over their states minimum wage. The majority of Dashers earn $15 to $25 per hour, and that is including all of their overhead cost.
If Dashers were paid by the hour they would be limited on their earnings, and really that would bring a whole new type of work force in. If Doordash paid hourly, I believe that most current Dashers would not do it anymore, but a whole new set of faces that are accustomed and satisfied with hourly pay would fill those Dasher positions quickly. I really believe that some people were made to be hourly workers, and there is nothing wrong with that, but then there are others that are just more productive on their own. Like an old song says "Different strokes for different folks."
Do a lot of Doordash customer's tip?
I'd say most Doordash customer tip something. Great tippers are very few, but they are out there. With that said, there are also many non-tippers. It's pretty easy to recognize the non-tippers most of the time. Those will be the offers coming in on your phone displaying a $2 or $3 payout. The reason that these amounts are so low is usually because the customer did not tip anything. These types of calls usually take longer to get delivered because most Dashers will not take them.
Do any Doordash customers ever tip in cash?
Yes, it does happen, but I would never wait for it or expect it because it is not very often. There are some Dashers that try to use a strategy and tell themselves that maybe some of those $2 or $3 orders are from a customer that has a $5 or $10 bill waiting for them at their door. So they will go do those orders and be disappointed almost every time. I would estimate that on average for every 20 dashes you do you'll get one cash tip. So 95 percent of the time you will not get a cash tip, and most of the time those cash tips are not coming from the $2 or $3 orders.
How often would I get paid if I was a dasher?
Dashers get paid every single week. The pay period ends Sunday night at midnight, and those weeks earnings are received by direct deposit during the next couple of days. All banks are different, but most people receive their money on Tuesday.
Don't Doordash have to hold a week of pay back?
Nope. That kind of stuff don't happen here. You can save that kind of stuff for what is known as regular employee jobs. It can be really annoying when a new employee has to wait 3 to 4 weeks to receive their first paycheck, but again, there's none of that here.
Is it true that I can get paid daily if I want?
You certainly can. Doordash has what they call "Fast Pay." With Fast Pay a Dasher can request money on a daily basis if they want. Once requested, the money is in their bank within minutes. Fast Pay is a great program for when you need money now. There is a small fee when using Fast Pay
